For A Great Ceiling Paint Job – Read This First

Ceiling Paint Project

Do your ceilings require some new life? Is a fresh coat of paint the answer to adding more beauty to a room – or many rooms? The experts at Franklin Painting of Connecticut know that painting a ceiling isn’t the same as painting a wall. We want to share some tips with you before you take the first step to ensure that your ceiling paint job turns out just the way you want it.

The right tools for the job

Experienced tradesmen in numerous professions know the importance of having the right tools in place before beginning a job. Here are the tools you’ll need to paint your ceiling.

  • Quality paint in an appropriate quantity
  • Primer/sealant (may or may not be necessary – ask your paint dealer)
  • Roller with extension handle
  • Roller pad (extra-thick nap for textured ceilings)
  • Rolling tray (preferably metal for stability)
  • Quality paint brush, 3- to 4-inch
  • Quick-release painters tape
  • Drop cloths – plastic is usually fine
  • Rags to wipe up spills
  • Old clothes to wear

Preparation

When you start painting, you want to keep painting until the job is done. This is why preparation is so important. First, remove from the room as much furniture as possible. Move all remaining furniture to the center of the room. Cover the furniture securely with drop cloths.

Assuming you have flooring or carpeting you care about, cover that, too. If you’re not going to be painting the walls and/or any trim, they need to be covered. Use the painters tape to secure the drop cloths.

Cut in the ceiling with the paint brush by painting a strip about three inches wide around its perimeter. (Do this for both the paint and the primer, if you use it. If you’re priming the ceiling, follow directions on the can.) By cutting in, you won’t have to bring the roller into direct contact with walls or trim when rolling.

Applying the paint

With all your equipment at hand and the room prepped and protected, painting your ceiling should be a fairly smooth process.

Prepare your Paint RollerCoat your roller pad evenly with paint from the tray. Apply the paint to the ceiling with short, even strokes about four feet long. Move left and right, rather than up and back as you go. When you need more paint, go back to the tray and fill up the pad again. Be careful not to over-fill the pad, or you’ll have paint droplets flying off the end of the roller and cascading through the air. Although everything in the room is protected, you’ll likely walk in these droplets unaware and end up tracking paint into other parts of the house.

Finally, in all your painting work, take it slow and careful. There’s no race. Trying to move as fast as you may have seen professional painters move isn’t wise and will likely prolong your job.

We wish you great results in painting your ceiling. If, however, you prefer to sit back and let a team of experienced paint professionals handle it, Franklin Painting is ready to bring you a fantastic result you’ll be proud of for years to come. Call us at 877-646-7774.
