Tips for Choosing Exterior House Paint Colors

Exterior House Painting 01When it comes time to paint your home’s exterior, no need to get stressed out over what paint colors to choose, even though literally thousands of exterior colors are available.  The best solution isn’t necessarily to simply choose the same colors again, because where’s the excitement in that?  Break out of both stress and boredom with a specific plan of action as your guide.  There are numerous approaches you can take for boldly choosing new exterior paint colors for your home.

Increase Intensity with Dark Shades

Keep in mind as you choose paint shades for your home that house paint loses intensity as it reflects its color into the atmosphere.  If you want your home to stand out with a strong appearance as opposed to having a flimsy look, choose colors a couple of shades darker than what may seem just right.  The field colors are the shades on the majority of the house; start with the field color and choose the trim and accent that will make the desired effect.

The color of the house’s trim is essential to the overall look.  Darker trim creates a framing effect, making windows seem like pictures hanging on a wall.  What usually works best is a lighter shade for the trim.  The lighter shade helps elements such as gutters absorb into the background.

The accent color you choose can add excitement and draw attention to features of the home you’d like to stand out, with just the right pop of color.

Paint a Test Wall

Quality exterior paint is not cheap, which means you aren’t likely to repaint your home if it doesn’t turn out well.  You’re probably already well aware that the way your home looks doesn’t just affect you; it affects your neighbors, as well.  A bad exterior paint job has definite public impact.

One way to eliminate the stress related to possibly choosing paint colors that don’t look good is to buy a quart of each shade you’ve chosen and paint a test area on an inconspicuous part of your home.  Any paint professional will tell you that choosing according to how paint chips or color strips look is not a reliable method because you can never tell beforehand exactly how paint will look on a particular home in the home’s environment.

After you’ve painted your test area, leave it there for a few days and see how it looks at sunrise, noon, and sunset.  This should make it easy for you to decide whether to go ahead with the chosen colors or go back to the drawing board.

Choose Paints that Match the Style of the House

Check historic architectural styles and paint your home in shades which match original color schemes.  While three shades are more the norm for exterior painting today, Colonial Revival homes, for example, were usually painted with one color for both the field and trim and a second color for accents; the brick color added a third shade to the overall look.

Victorian homes offer many exciting choices; in days past this style of home was sometimes painted with as many as six or more shades of trim and accent.  It’s helpful to get the assistance of a color specialist, when going with more complicated color schemes.
